Study Abroad - Aussies Encouraged to Study Abroad

Aussies Encouraged to Study Abroad
The Federal government is looking at ways of encouraging Australian students to study abroad. Education Minister Julie Bishop announced that the Federal government would commission a review in the coming weeks in order to address the issue.

Ms Bishop said that the purpose of the review was to identify the obstacles to Australian students studying abroad and how this can best be addressed.

"Compared with other countries, few Australians take the opportunity to study abroad and we need to identify opportunities and obstacles for students, she said.

"We need to address perceptions of the value of study abroad, including contribution to graduates' skills, adaptability and employability".

Ms Bishop was speaking during the International Education Forum 2006 held in Brisbane and which included participants from across the Asia-Pacific region.

Ms Bishop said that there was common consensus on student and staff mobility issues and the the transferability of qualifications.

"Student mobility and exchange are seen by all countries as providing the basis for firendship, mutual respect, understanding and peace in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond", she said.
